Container-based Solutions: Resource Effective Spaces for Living and Learning

We’ve reached almost the end of week 5, and we’re going to focus on container-based spaces, as homes, extra living areas, public places, for businesses and for schools. Upcycling of shipping containers saves 95 percent of the energy otherwise used to melt them down for steel recycling.

Container spaces have been studio Alternatives’ main focus since 2014. The versatility and structural strength of used shipping containers create ideal frameworks for secure, high-quality accommodation, ranging from affordable to luxurious. Their inherent mobility and modular design allow for quick deployment to and re-installation at inaccessible areas with minimal ground intervention. Users can easily expand the space later and connect to main grids or utilize off-grid solutions. We continually explore alternative and eco-friendly techniques to enhance the container living experience.

Container Spaces for Learning

Studio Alternatives converts containers into educational spaces like classrooms, activity centers, and daycares, often for NGOs and schools. Examples include creating a flexible classroom for underprivileged children under a flyover (Signal School) and building a theme-based “Animal Train” Day Care Centre. These sturdy, temporary structures are easily moved and often incorporate upcycled elements to promote environmental awareness among students.
