Are you planning to carry out a Studio as a Learning Environment activity with us at Studio Blåsenhus? We look forward to it! Start by exploring the different Studio as a Learning Environment examples available in the Studio Menu and by watching the documentary Studio as a Learning Environment, which we describe below.

You will then find more information about Studio as a Learning Environment at Studio Blåsenhus. This page differs somewhat from the other coaching pages because it is the students who carry out the recordings. We have created a Studium page containing information for students before their Studio as a Learning Environment activity, which you are welcome to add to your course page (we can show you how). You may also link to other pages available through the Studio Menu, including the coaching pages.

What Is Studio as a Learning Environment?

Over the past three years, we have carried out around thirty student projects at Studio Blåsenhus, ranging from podcasts to video productions, designed to function as assessed learning activities. This is what we refer to as Studio as a Learning Environment. We find that students greatly appreciate this type of learning activity, that it supports their learning, and that it strengthens aspects such as employability and oral communication skills. We plan these activities together with teachers, with both the overall course design and student learning at the centre of the process.

Documentary: Studio as a Learning Environment

In the documentary Studio as a Learning Environment (Studio som lärmiljö - in Swedish), you will meet both students and teachers who share their experiences of working in Studio Blåsenhus at Uppsala University. The students describe their learning process while working in this learning environment, and the teachers explain the reasoning behind their decision to implement the learning activity in Studio Blåsenhus. The documentary was created by Sofia Grunér and Andreas Forsberg during 2024-2025.

Structure of a Studio as a Learning Environment Activity

When you carry out a Studio as a Learning Environment activity at Studio Blåsenhus, we schedule both a studio visit for the students and one or more recording sessions in the studio. These components are described in more detail below.

Studio Visit at Studio Blåsenhus

Before the students carry out their recording at Studio Blåsenhus, they visit the studio together with you as the teacher. During this visit, students meet the studio staff, explore the studio environment, and learn about the technology they will use during the recording session in a playful and engaging way. We have developed these studio visits over several years and have found that they play an important role in helping students feel confident and perform well during the recording session itself.

Recording Session at Studio Blåsenhus

On the day of the recording session, students arrive at Studio Blåsenhus with their group. In most cases, the teacher is not present. We welcome the student group and begin with a brief “strategy talk,” where we explain what will happen during the session. The group then carries out its recording. We guide students whenever support is needed, but they are also given the opportunity to control much of the technology themselves if they wish, which we often find they both enjoy and manage very well.

After the recording session, the files are transferred to the teacher, who uploads them to Studium.

Student Recordings Within the Overall Course Design

We recommend that, as a teacher, you begin by considering how the recordings created by students will be integrated into the course as a whole. This often helps determine what type of course content you would like students to explore in greater depth through their recordings, which questions you would like them to discuss or present, and how the recordings can be connected to the wider course.

Many teachers schedule a follow-up seminar after the recording day. Prior to this seminar, students watch each other's recordings and then discuss them based on questions prepared by the teacher. Over the years, we have found that these activities become even more effective when teachers move beyond simply providing feedback on the recordings and instead use them as a springboard for new themes, questions, or additional course content connected to the recordings. In the documentary (see above), students also describe how they use these recordings when studying for examinations, treating them as a form of course material.

Studio as a Learning Environment Workshop

During Spring 2026, we (Sofia Grunér and Andreas Forsberg) developed the workshop Studio as a Learning Environment. The intended audience is either teachers interested in organising a Studio as a Learning Environment activity for their students, or students who will themselves participate in such an activity. We delivered this workshop at the NU2026 Higher Education Pedagogy Conference in Gothenburg. The workshop materials are now freely available for other higher education institutions to use and can be accessed via this page. Please contact us if you would like to know more.

Finally

Studio as a Learning Environment is a concept that continues to develop together with the teachers and students we work with. We look forward to hearing from you and to continuing to develop Studio as a Learning Environment together with you.
