Are you planning to record at the Small TV Studio position in Studio Blåsenhus? We look forward to helping you! Begin by exploring the different examples of recordings from the Small TV Studio available in The Studio Menu. Below, you will find a number of tips related to recordings made in the Small TV Studio at Studio Blåsenhus.

A Brief Introduction to the Technology and Equipment

At the Small TV Studio position, you display your material (for example, a PowerPoint presentation) on a screen located in the studio. You stand next to the screen and have the opportunity to point to and work with the screen in various ways when appropriate in relation to the material. A camera records you standing next to the screen. At this position, you may present on your own, or two teachers can present the material together. This creates a great dynamic in the recording!

The planning stage

The recording's place within the course: Plan from the outset how the recording will be integrated into your course so that it does not stand alone without context. On this page, you can read more about flipped classroom, a model in which the recording is planned as preparation before a scheduled teaching session.
How long should the recording be? Shorter recordings are often more accessible for students and help avoid cognitive overload and loss of focus compared to long recorded lectures. At the same time, it is important to include the content you want to cover. A good guideline is to aim for recordings that are no longer than 20 minutes, and to divide the recording into sections if it is planned to be longer than that.
Prepare your PowerPoint and think of the entire PowerPoint canvas as your pedagogical tool. Since the camera is filming the PowerPoint presentation, you should avoid a white or light grey background, as this may appear too bright in the camera and recording. Instead, use a darker background or an image that covers the entire slide onto which you place your text. See the examples below. In the studio, we can also help you with this, and together we will review your material to ensure that it looks good in the recording.

You are encouraged to work with different colours and icons to distinguish different parts of the PowerPoint presentation with student learning in mind. Feel free to use animations to reveal content gradually. We would be happy to help you with this preparation, so please contact us if you would like assistance.
You can also work exclusively with images that you connect to your content. This can create a recording in which students associate the knowledge being presented with the images you have selected. See the example below.

Avoid including specific information such as dates or similar details in your recording. This allows the recording to remain relevant and usable over a longer period of time.
Plan and rehearse your presentation. Spend a little extra time practising the introduction so that you know how you want to begin and end your recording, for example by summarising what has been covered in that section.

On the Recording day

Imagine your students in front of you, in the camera lens. Use"you" rather than "one" or "you all" when addressing students in the recording. This creates personality and a sense of closeness between you and the student, even though you are not in the same room.
Maintain a normal speaking pace and speak clearly without becoming overly deliberate.
Maintain eye contact with the camera as much as possible. You can think of three focal points: the camera lens, your computer with your notes, and the screen beside you. If you can manage without notes and rely solely on the screen, this may make things easier. Alternate between these different focal points and try to place the emphasis on the camera lens.
Be yourself! Imagine your students in the camera lens and try not to play a role or behave differently from how you would if you were presenting the content on campus.
If you lose your train of thought, it is not the end of the world. Try, as far as possible, to correct mistakes such as an incorrect choice of words by rephrasing what you are saying. Students appreciate seeing a real person. If that is not possible, the recording can be stopped and restarted from, for example, the presentation slide where the mistake occurred. We are here to help!
Put visual content into words, such as images, tables, graphs, and similar elements in your presentation, before describing the content itself. Remember that your content should be understandable without looking at the screen.
Clothing? Wear something that you feel comfortable in. Avoid black clothing, as we often use a dark background at this position. If you are recording several lectures as part of a series, you may either wear the same outfit each time or deliberately choose different outfits if you would like each recording to stand out.

After recording

After the recording, we may need to edit the recording. This is done together with you as the user. We provide basic editing, such as removing silence at the beginning and end of the recording, as well as a limited number of cuts within the recording itself due to retakes or similar circumstances.
For accessibility reasons, a recording must include either captions or a transcript. You can create these using various tools provided by the university. Read more about this on this page.
When the recording is fully completed, upload it to the learning platform. On this page, we show how a video can be uploaded to Canvas Studio and embedded on a course page.

Good luck! It will go great, and we are here to help you!
