Gradebook | Ouriginal (Urkund)

Urkund changes its name to Ouriginal

In 2020, the company behind the Urkund system merged with a German company with a similar product (PlagScan). Both the company and the system are now called Ouriginal. When you create an assignment in Studium and use Plagiarism Review, you will now see the name Ouriginal.

If you are already used to working with Urkund, then you will not see any differences. The analysis pages look the same as before and the name Urkund is still there. All existing Urkund accounts and analysis email addresses will work as usual.

What is Ouriginal?

Ouriginal is a system for detecting and handling plagiarism of texts in files and is based on various methods for text-recognition. The system compares different types of text blocks that appear in a submitted file, to find similarities with different sources. The results are presented on a special analysis page for the teacher. In short, it works so that students upload their files using the Assignment tool here in Studium, which in turn forwards the files to the system Ouriginal, where they are checked against three central source areas:

  • Internet, e.g. web sites, newspapers, openly stored reports.
  • Publishing material, e.g. e-books.
  • Older student documents, i.e., submissions, reports, memos, degree projects, etc., which have already been uploaded by other students to Ouriginal, not only from Uppsala University, but from various universities around the world.

The degree of found text that is similar to the students' submitted files is shown as a colored label in the Gradebook. For each student, Speedgrader shows a colored label, a percentage and a link to Ouriginal's analysis page, where the teacher can decide whether it is really plagiarized text or not.

Activate Ouriginal in an assignment

Ouriginal_Inställningar.png Ouriginal is an integrated feature in the Assignment tool in Studium.

This means that if your students' documents will be reviewed by Ouriginal, you create an assignment and activate Ouriginal within the assignment's settings.

  1. It is important to know that Ouriginal can only review text entries and files. At least one of these options must be selected to make the Plagiarism Review box available. Hence, the submission type of the task must be set to Text entry or File Uploads, or both.

  2. The Plagiarism Review setting will now be available and you can select Ouriginal.

  3. Checking the Anonymous box means that the student's name is removed from the analysis, but you will still find a link to the  analysis from Studium.
NOTE! If the assignment will be assessed anonymously in Studium, it is important also to check Anonymous for the Ouriginal review.

  4. Finally, choose whether the students should be able to see their own analysis report or not (Show reports to students). We recommend that you use the standard option Never, to avoid unnecessary stress and misunderstanding among students. You, as a teacher, are responsible for the control of the analysis. If you want later, you can share the analysis to the students from Ouriginal's analysis page.
The other choices at the Show reports to students  are: Immediately, After the assignment is graded, After the due date deadline.

Inform the students

If you use Ouriginal's plagiarism control in assignments in your courses, please write in the course information and/or in the description of the assignment that the submitted document will be reviewed with regard to plagiarism, so that the students are aware of this even before submitting their documents.

Example text for students:

This assignment will be analysed by Ouriginal (formerly Urkund) which is a text-matching system for plagiarism control, i.e. your submitted file will be compared with various sources on the internet, older submitted essays, etc.

How to view Ouriginal's analysis report

As a teacher, you get a clear overview of how the Ouriginal review is progressing by going to Grades. When the analysis is complete, you will see small colored labels in the assignment column. Regardless of which teacher has created the assignment with Ouriginal connection, all teachers in the course can see the colored labels and follow links to Ouriginal's analysis pages.

Gradebook_ColorFlags.pngColored labels in the assignment column:

An Ouriginal review can take a few minutes, but can also take up to 24 hours.

Colored label = analysis completed.

Timer = analysis in progress.

Inside SpeedGrader

The SpeedGrader window will display the document submitted by the student and the Similarity Code (a coloured box with a percentage) located in the right uppermost corner.  At first you only see a grey box with a timer symbol, which means that the analysis is in progress (Submission pending). You will also see a button Resubmit to Ouriginal. You can click on the button if the file has somehow got stuck and no colored percentage box appears.

As soon as the analysis is complete, you will see a colored box with a percentage number,  that shows how much compliance Ouriginal has found.

New analysis page at Ouriginal (Urkund)

The analysis pages still uses the name Urkund.

If you click on the colored box at the top right corner of the Speedgrader window for a specific student, you will be taken directly to the  Ouriginal analysis web site.

The first page you come to looks like this:

Urkund NEW.png

You click further under FINDINGS to see more details about the analysis. At the top right under PROFILE you can find a menu:

  Urkund PROFILE.png

If you want to share the analysis with the student, you can either choose Export report (provides a pdf file) or Share analysis report (you enter the student's e-mail address and he/she will then receive an email with a link to the analysis page).

Old analysis page at Ouriginal (Urkund)

If you prefer Urkund's old analysis interface, you can switch to that one. At the top right of the new analysis page next to the PROFILE menu is a switch with the text NEW URKUND. The yellow-green color shows that this is Ouriginal's (Urkund's) new interface.

Also in this interface, you can share the analysis with the student by choosing Export (the report is exported to a pdf file) or Share (you enter the student's e-mail address and he / she will then receive an email with a link to the analysis page).

How does Urkund account work for assignments?

NOTE! We use the name Urkund here, as the company Ouriginal will not change these specific accounts, which are linked to the analysis reports.

As we have already mentioned, all teachers in the course have access to the Ouriginal analysis reports, but actually it is the teacher  who created, or last edited,  the assignment who actually "owns" the Ouriginal connection from Studium. It works in a different way than in the Student Portal. We explain below.

Some information about what happens "behind the scenes"

When you first create an assignment in Studium and choose to use the Ouriginal (Urkund) Plagiarism Review in the settings, a special Urkund account is automatically created for you. This is used every time you create an assignment with Ouriginal review in Studium. You will receive a special Urkund email address on the form Firstname.Lastname.uu@analys.urkund.se, which you can also use for plagiarism control outside Studium, by sending documents to this address.

Do you want to receive emails from Urkund when students submit documents?

By default, the teacher who created the assignment do not automatically receive generated emails from Urkund when students submit documents. If you wish to receive such emails, you need first to lonce ink your Urkund account to your e-mail address at Uppsala University:

  1. Go to https://www.ouriginal.com/login/ Links to an external site.
  2. Choose  Log in to Web App
  3. Choose  Have you forgotten your password
  4. Fill in your Uppsala University e-mail address and klick on Reset password
  5. You will get an e-mail from Urkund, please follow the link and set your password.

After you have done this, you can log in to Urkund's website. To enable e-mail reports from Urkund, you must log in to your Urkund account and check the setting: Send report by email.

Change "owner" to the assignment

If you want to change an existing assignment (e.g. because you have copied a course or parts of a course to start from in a new course a semester later), let the teacher whose Urkund account you want should be used for the assignment be the one who "owns" the assignment. To link the information to you and your Urkund account, do the following: Edit the information, i.e., delete plagiarism review in settings and save. Then edit the same task again and add plagiarism review and save. The person who last changed the information is the person whose Urkund account will be used.

What do the students see?

Students do not automatically see that the document submitted to the assignment tool in Studium will be reviewed by Ouriginal, therefore we recommend teachers to inform the students, see above.

After the student has submitted his/hers document, he/she receives an automated receipt via e-mail from Urkund. This letter also contains information that the student himself/herself can choose to "exclude" his/hers document. This means that the document will be included in the analysis phase for all documents submitted later from different universities and schools, but only teachers at Uppsala University can view the document's content or download the document if findings are found against later submitted documents. Teachers at other universities can see that there is a findning on a document at Uppsala University, but they do not see the document or the text itself.

If you in the settings have chosen to show the analysis to the students, the easiest way for the students to reach the analysis is via Grades. There are similar symbols as in the teacher interface. When an analysis is complete, the student can click on the colored label to get directly to the analysis.

We recommend that you do not show the analysis directly to students, as it may cause unnecessary stress to them. It is the teacher's responsibility to assess whether Ouriginal's analysis is really plagiarism or not and in some cases discuss it further with the student. If you later want to, you can share the analysis to the students from Ouriginal's analysis page.
