How should I communicate with my students?

Studium offers many possibilities for communicating with students and student groups. Regardless which ways of communicating you choose it's important to be consistent and to clarify these ways for the students. It might be good idea to consider all types of communication that is required in the course or module you're responsible for, talk it over with your colleagues and construct a plan for how you intend to communicate with the students. What contact information do you need to communicate? Do you even need to use the email, or can all communication happen in Studium?

Types of communication and their functions in Studium

Instructions

This includes all type of prepared and instructing communication to the students. Here you have the opportunity to get ahead of students' questions by answering them right away.

The welcome page: You can build this by creating a Page, or by using the Syllabus function. The page can be designed using formatting templates, pictures and links.
Course information: You can present all the course information on one or several Pages, that can link to each other. These can be added to a first module that contains all relevant course information.
Task instruction: In every task (hand-in, quiz, discussion) you can write extensive instructions for how the student should perform the task. You can also manage feedback expectations here. The instruction is designed the same way as a Page.

Information and notices

This is the information that isn't prewritten instructions, but that still consists of one-way communication with the students, where you as a teacher don't need any replies. It can be e.g. messages about a changed venue for a lecture.

Announcement: You can publish information and notices on the course's Announcements board. The students get notifications by the system and the announcement can be shown at the top of the course start page. Announcements are designed the same way as a Page. See guide: Announcements

Conversations with students

This is the two-way communication that you need to have with the students. It can be everything from answering the students' questions to getting updates on the progress of their group work.

Inbox: You can send messages to individual students, student groups or all students in a course. In a message you can attach files and even record videos directly into your message. The students can also write directly to you. Inbox is connected to your email. See guide: Conversations (Inbox)
Discussions: Here you can have either graded or ungraded discussions with the students. You can also allow students to create their own discussion threads.

Feedback

Feedback in regards to formative and summative assessment can also easily be given entirely in Studium.

Comments on a hand-in: Notations you make in the student's/group's text is shown when the student opens the hand-in, and they can see any comment you have made relating to the hand-in.
Comments on a task: This comment is connected to the whole task, and not a specific hand-in. Here the student/group can see the comments connected to their performance in the task. Gradebook | Grading in SpeedGrader
Message students who: This function sends a message to all students who for example haven't handed in anything yet, or have been given a specific grade. Here you can inform them about e.g. re-examination or principles of re-submission.

But what do the students see?

The students have the same options as teachers to choose themselves what they want to get push notifications or emails from the system about. Regardless what ways of communication you choose, please encourage all students to have the following notifications active:
