Question Types

Inside your newly created quiz, you can add new questions by clicking on the blue plus sign. This opens a small window in which you can choose question type.. Below you can read about the different question types and how to create them.

Categorisation

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.
  2. Name the categories and write answers.
  3. Add more answers.

Essay

  1. Give the question a title and write instructions.
  2. Show the students the on-screen calculator.
  3. Allow students to use the Rich Content Editor (as opposed to a plain text box)
  4. Turn on spell-check.
  5. Show word count.
  6. Set a minimum or maximum word limit.

File upload

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.
  2. Under Options:
    a. Limit File number - Limit the number of files studets can upload.
    b. Restrict File Types - Write which file extensions are allowed. Separate file extensions with commas.

Fill in the Blank

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.
  2. Type a statement. Select a word or a group of words and click enter on your keyboard to create a blank space.

Select answer type:

3. Open Entry - Students write the answer in the blank space.

a. The student's answer must contain the phrase/word.
b. The student's answer must be close enough to the phrase/word. (Uses Levenshtein Distance to determine if the response is close enough to the correct answer. Levenshtein Distance is the number of single-character edits needed to change one word to another. You can choose to ignore case.)
c. Requires case and spelling to match exactly to phrase/word.
d. Add several correct answers/variations of the phrase/word.
e. Requires using specialized text strings that describe search patterns.

4. Dropdown - Add correct answer and incorrect answers. Students choose the answer via dropdown menu.
5. Word Bank - Add correct answer and incorrect answers. Students choose the answer by dragging and dropping words from a bank.

Formula

Enter your question, build a formula, and generate a set of possible answer combinations. Students will see the question with a randomly selected set of variables filled in and have to type the correct numerical answer.

  1. Give the question a title.
  2. Enter a question. You can define variables by typing variable names surrounded by backticks (e.g., "what is 5 plus `x`?")
  3. Once you have entered your variables under Question, you should see them listed under Answers. You can specify the range of possible values for each variable.
  4. Next, write the formula, or formulas, used to compute the correct answer. Use the same variable names listed above. (e.g., "5 + x")

4. Finally, build as many variable-solution combinations as you need for your quiz.
5. Click Generate to create possible solutions. All solutions will be generated and shown further down.
6. Under Options, you can enable students to be able to use a calculator.

Hot Spot

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.
  2. Upload your image.
  3. Choose whether you want the hot spot selection to be square, circular or polygon (custom shape).
  4. Click on the image and dra your mouse to select the hot spot.
  5. To delete your selection, click the trashcan icon under the image.
Notice: This question type is not accessible to users requiring keyboard-only access or screen readers.

Matching

Students choose the correct second half of matching pairs via dropdown menus on the right.

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.
  2. To the left: Add the first part of the matching pair. To the right: add the second half of the matching pair.
  3. Add additional question/answer pairs
  4. Add distractions which do not belong to any pair.

Multiple answer

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.
  2. Write correct answers and wrong answers. Correct answers are marked by checkmarks on the left.
  3. Add more answers.

4. Shuffle Choices - Shuffles the correct and incorrect answers.
5. Grading:

a. Partial credit with penalty - Students recieve partial points for choosing partially correct answers.
b. Exact Match - All answers must be correct.

  1. Give the question a title and add a question stem.

  4. Under Options, you can shuffle choices.

Numeric  

  1. Give the question a title.
  2. Write a question.
  3. Choose answer type. (More info regarding answer types further down.)
  4. Under Options, you can enable students to be able to use a calculator.

Exact Response

Enter an answer by typing the answer in the Answer field or using the arrows. Exact response answers can be added in scientific notation (accepted format: 1.234*10^5). Students responses will be marked correct if they match the answer exactly.

Note: The Range fields only accept numbers, periods, commas, asterisks, and carets.

Margin of Error

Enter the answer in the Answer field. Then add the margin in the Margin field and select the margin type in the Margin Type drop-down menu. You can select percentage or absolute margin type. Margin of error fields do not accept entries written in scientific notation. Student answers will be marked correct if they fall within the margin above or below the answer.

Note: The Answer and Margin fields only accept numbers, periods, and commas.

Within a Range

Select the range start and range end for the answer. Range inputs can be in scientific notation (accepted format: 1.234*10^5). Student responses will be marked correct if they are greater than or equal to the range start and less than or equal to the range end.

Note: The Range fields only accept numbers, periods, commas, asterisks, and carets.

Precise Response

Select the answer, precision value, and precision type. The options for precision type are significant digits and decimal places. Precise response fields do not accept entries written in scientific notation. Student responses will be marked as correct if they match the answer to the given number of significant digits or decimal places.

Note: The Answer field only accept numbers, periods, and commas. The Precision field only accepts whole numbers greater than 1.

Ordering

  1. Give the question a title.
  2. By default, Ordering questions will include a top label and a bottom label. Give the labels names. (eg. Big/Small, Tall/Short, 1900/1800.)
  3. Add answers for the students to place in order.
  4. You can move Answers into their correct order by clicking on the right dots and dragging it up or down.

5. Options:

a. Display Answers in a Paragraph - Answers will lay next to each other instead of on top of each other.
b. Include Labels - Uncheck this setting to remove the labels.
