Oral examination

Oral exam

A mandatory and individual oral examination is conducted at the end of the course.

Registration

Register to one of the slots in the course calendar. Find the slots via the "Find appointment" button. If you have registered for the exam but later decide not to take the exam this time, please unregister from your slot.

The format

  • The oral exam is individual
  • In total 25 min is reserved for each student.
  • In the first 7 minutes the student is expected to present the material covered in course.
  • After the 7 minute presentation the teacher(s) will ask complementary questions.

The 7 minutes presentation

  • The presentation shall be organized such that it is convincing that you have achieved the expected learning outcome of the course.
  • You are strongly advised to prepare these 7 minutes in advance. Advice on how to prepare it are found on the bottom of this page.
  • You are allowed (and even encouraged) to collaborate while preparing the 7 minute presentation. Remember to be prepared to answer questions based on your presentation.
  • The teacher(s) will interrupt the presentation after the 7 minutes regardless if it is finished or not.

Grading

  • The oral examination is graded with U/3/4/5
  • For grade 3, all learning outcomes have to be fulfilled. If the teachers are not convinced that this is the case after the 7 minutes presentation, we will use parts of the complementary questions to verify this.
  • For grade 4 and 5 you need to convince us that you have a deeper understanding of the subject. The sooner the fulfillment of the expected learning outcome has been verified, the more time you have to achieve the higher grades.
  • If you have passed the oral examination, the mini-project and the computer lab, the grade of the oral examination will also be the grade of the whole course.
  • For PhD students, the oral examination will only be graded with U/G so also the course.

Practical matter

  • Remember to bring your ID to the examination
  • You are allowed to bring the mini-project report if you want. Except from that, you are not allowed to use any other notes or literature during the examination.
  • You can choose if you want to do the exam in English or Swedish.
  • There will be a whiteboard (and pens) in the room. You may use that during your presentation. No computer-based presentation (like PowerPoint) is allowed.
  • Each oral examination will be recorded (only sound). Let us know if your have problems with that.

Exam via zoom

If you do you exam via zoom, the following measures should be consider

  • If the internet connection is unstable, we will have to cancel the exam and re-schedule it for a later occasion. We will make our best to make sure the connection is stable on our side, and we advise you to take similar measures (such as locating yourself close to the wifi router or even better use a wired connection).
  • You need to have a webcam which is turned on during the entire exam. As for the onsite exams, we will start by asking you to present your ID (via the webcam).
  • We strongly recommend you to have some solution for substituting the whiteboard in the exam room. At the very least you can have pen and paper on which you can write and thereafter show us in the webcam, but it is perhaps more convenient for you to use a real whiteboard (to which you can point the webcam while you are writing), write on a tablet (and share as a second screen on Zoom), use Google jamboard (and share your screen), use your smartphone as a document camera Links to an external site. and connect that to the zoom meeting as well, or use the following trick: https://www.popsugar.co.uk/parenting/teacher-hack-for-showing-students-documents-at-home-47774818 Links to an external site.
  • Make sure you are familiar with your technical setup before the exam starts. The time limit (25 minutes) is strict, and we cannot extend the time because of technical problems.

We will use the same zoom meeting room for the exam as we have used during the course. When you enter you are placed in a "waiting room", and we will let you in when it is your turn.

Advice on how to prepare your 7 minutes presentation

1. Make sure you understand the content of the course. Like: What concepts do we use? What methods do we have? How do the methods work? What problems do we (not?) solve? Etc.

2. Pick out what you think are the most central/fundamental/crucial parts of that knowledge. This probably includes both the key ideas behind the different methods, as well as how they are related to each other. This step will (and should!) take time.

3. Think of how you can (orally, with the possible help of a whiteboard) present your outcome from the previous step. Give it a first try, and make sure it is somewhere around 7 minutes.

4. Walk through the learning outcomes from the course syllabus. Your oral exam will be assessed based on these. Therefore, make sure that your presentation covers all learning outcomes.

5. Polish, repeat and refine your presentation. Do not forget the timing, the 7 minutes limit will be strict.

In the best case, you will manage to convince the teachers that you fulfill all learning outcomes (= pass, grade 3) during your 7 minutes presentation, and there will be 18 minutes left for a more deeper discussion lead by the teacher which (depending on its outcome) can lead to a higher grade (4 or 5). If not, the teachers will have to spend additional time on asking additional questions to see whether you fulfill the learning outcomes (= pass, grade 3), and there will consequently be less time left for deeper discussions.

Re-examination

  • As for written exams, in addition to the regular exam period in October, there will be an opportunity to take the exam in conjunction with the re-examination periods in December and August every year.

August re-exam 2021

The reexam in August we will offer on campus (in case the covid situation does not get worse). The exam takes place on August 19 in ITC 2344.

You find available slots in the course calendar. Find the slots via the "Find appointment" button.  When signing up, write in the comment "Via zoom" if you you want to do it over zoom. If you do it over zoom, make sure that your technical setup is working prior the exam, see further information about exam via zoom below. If you have registered for the exam but later decide not to take the exam this time, please unregister from your slot.

Note: This is the last time oral exams will be offered in the course. According course plan of 2021/2022 the examination will onward be written exam.

Easter re-exam 2021

As announced earlier, we will give one extra opportunity to do the exam during the Easter re-exam period. It will take place on March 30, 2021. You find available slots in the course calendar.

Due to the covid situation, we can still not offer it on campus. We therefore do it over zoom as we did during the December re-exam period. Make sure that your technical setup is working prior the exam, see further information about exam via zoom below.

December re-exam 2020

The December re-exam will take place on December 18. You find available slots in the course calendar.

As a consequence of the tightening COVID-19 restrictions and in line the Vice-Chancellor’s decision Links to an external site., we have decided to only offer the re-exam online via zoom this time. As a consequence of this restriction we will also offer the possibility to do the exam during the Easter re-exam period 2021, which next year 2021 is 29/3-1/4. Hopefully, it will be possible to offer the option to do it on campus then. Make sure that your technical setup is working prior the exam, see further information about exam via zoom below.
