Welcome and contact information

Welcome to the course Scientific Computing III

This course contains three modules:

  • PDEs and solution of linear/nonlinear systems as arising from either FDM/FEM
  • PDEs and solution via FDMs
  • PDEs and solution via FEMs

The main focus is thus on solutions to PDEs and methods for solving the resulting equations: solution methods based on finite differences and finite element methods, direct (LU-factorization) and iterative methods for solutions to systems of equations. Theoretical/practical, as well as validation aspects are discussed in relation to the methods presented in the course. Use of computational software (Matlab). Examples of key concepts covered in the course: accuracy and order of accuracy, efficiency, consistency, stability, convergence.

In short we will study computational approaches arising in describing reality via PDEs.

Schedule

In total we will have 11 Lectures, 3 labs, 3 workouts and 3 miniprojects. A rough outline follows:

  • Week 1, 2: intro to PDEs, solving systems of equations
  • Week 3, 4: PDEs and FDM
  • Week 5, 6: PDEs and FEM
  • Week 7: Course review and repetition
  • Week 8: Final exam

Examination

The course is graded with respect to your final examination and your project achievement. The course is completed only if you pass all assignments and the exam.

  • Project and assignments: 2 credits
  • Final examination: 3 credits
