Studium (5/11)
In this session we looked at some new features in Canvas (Studium) using the beta environment https://uppsala.beta.instructure.com/login/saml
Features are tools that are still under development but are made available for testing by users. Some tools have only been activated in our BETA environment to avoid unintended consequences for students. Feel free to contact us with your feedback about the features and we can pass them along to the provider.
Read further for a summary of the tools we looked at in today's session.
To use Smart search
- Go to the course settings and enable Smart Search.
- After activation you can decide where to place the search feature in the course menu.
To test AI generated summary in a discussion
- The feature is enabled at the course level through the Feature Options tab in Course Settings.
- Once enabled, instructors will see a "Summarize" button at the top of discussion threads.
- After students have replied to a discussion post, instructors can click the Summarize button to generate an AI-powered summary of all key points from student replies.
- The summary appears in a box below the original discussion post and is only visible to the instructor.
To test AI translation in the Inbox (only in Beta environment at this time)
With this feature enabled, users can use AI supported translations to translate Inbox message content. Additionally, messages in the inbox that don't align with a user's preferred language, as specified in their settings, are automatically translated.
When you compose a new message you will have the option of selecting Translation as well as choosing the language that you would like the message translated to.
To use AI translation in a course - Announcements and Discussions (only in Beta environment at this time)
- The feature is enabled at the course level through the Feature Options tab in Course Settings.
- When you click on the announcement or discussion you will find the Translate text feature from the breadcrumb menu at the top right.

Other university tools that have AI features
Zoom and Mentimeter have AI tools that you might see a button for when you are using them. However, a data protection agreement is not currently in place, which means that for the time being we are not able to use them. Hopefully we will gain access to the new AI tools in the coming year.
Zoom AI Companion
Zooms AI Companion assists users by creating content such as meeting agendas, email drafts, and summaries of discussions. Its key feature is real-time transcriptions, automated note-taking, and the ability to generate action items from meetings.
AI Menti Builder
AI Menti Builder is a new tool in Mentimeter that let's you write a prompt to create an interactive presentation, live poll or quiz. Another AI integration available is used to group and analyse responses.
