Course syllabus
Welcome to the course Environmental Ethnography (7,5 ECTS)!
About the course
The course aims to present ethnographic perspectives on human-non-human relations. After completing the course, you are expected to be able to account for central themes in environmental ethnographic studies; to critically reason about the nature-culture entanglements; to explore environmental knowledge through ethnographic methods, to reflect on ethical and epistemological implications of environmental ethnographic studies and identify the contributions of such a perspective for a sustainable future.
Course start
The course starts with an introduction and first lecture on Thursday, November 5 (the exact time and location to be announced).

To start the course, you need to be registered. It is not enough simply to have been admitted. On the Admissions and Registration page, you will find instructions on how to register. Studying with disabilities
If you require additional support in your studies, you need to obtain a certificate in order to receive it, known as a NAIS certificate. Apply as early as possible after you have registered for the course to receive support as quickly as possible.
Teaching and expectations
The classes are held once a week on Campus Engelska parken in Uppsala, mainly on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You find a detailed schedule once you have registered for the course. Please note that attendance to class is mandatory.
We expect you to read the assigned book chapters, articles, and any other course material before you come to class, and to participate actively in each class. You will find all information about assignments, the detailed attendance policy and the course examination when you register for the course
You can expect to meet competent and engaged teachers who conduct research on socio-environmental relations, apply ethnographic perspectives and methods in our work, and carefully prepare each class.
Examination
The course is examined through a group assignment oral presentation, an individual written hand-in exam, and an individual oral exam. The oral exams are on-site in Uppsala before the Christmas break (on December 17) and after the New Year (on January 16).
Hence, please be aware that the fall semester at Uppsala University ends on January 17, 2027, and we expect you to be in Uppsala until then.
Kurslitteratur
We use the book Environmental Anthropology: Current Issues and Fields of Engagement (2023) by Michael Bollig and Franz Krause. You can buy this book at multiple book stores. It is, of course, also available online at the University Library, as are all the articles and book chapters used. The films and podcasts are publicly available online.
