Sizing Up the Barrier
Students often vary significantly in their prior knowledge of course content and skills. They may also vary in terms of the speed with which they can successfully progress through the course content, and some students would be highly motivated by the ability to control their own pacing through certain modules. However, the majority of courses – whether taught online or face-to-face – standardize both content and pacing. Since students may need different amounts of content to achieve mastery, or would benefit from moving either faster or slower through the content, this static and standardized method is frequently inefficient and ineffective.
