Conclusion: MasteryPaths
Summary & Conclusion
In the online asynchronous or hybrid (blended) learning environment, students may vary significantly in terms of what they already know or need to learn as well as the speed with which they would like to move, if they had the option.
MasteryPaths reflects the concept of providing flexibility in instructional design to match the variability of one's students.
There are Canvas Guides to walk instructors and instructional designers through the process of creating MasteryPaths. In addition, MasteryPaths are most effective when each module is developed to focus on one topic for which student knowledge, understanding, or skill is measured by a unidimensional assessment. Ideally, MasteryPaths will be developed with prerequisites and requirements to allow students to progress through a course independently and at their own pace based on the mastery they demonstrate on each topic.
The MasteryPaths tool is one of the most design-intensive features in Canvas. The up-front work for MasteryPath courses will require intense instructor planning and development, but will eventually lead to more efficient, effective learning for students.
